Yule, also the Winter Solsitce, marks the longest night of the year. Although it marks the beginning of winter, it also symbolizes the hope of longer days and the cold winter eventually giving way to the spring. This is a time of burning the yule log, yummy foods and time spent with loved ones. It's also a time to remember those who have passed on. This is the original start of decorating trees and many other favorite holiday traditions.
This is the beginning of winter and a good time to spend going within to search for your own inner truths. What do you feel the Universe wants you to put your attention on? What situations, people and things are you preparing to release?
Walking is a relatively low-impact way to get in excercise, but it's also a great way to add another mindfulness practice to your life. Choose somewhere with interesting or beautiful things to see such an outdoor art exhibit, labyrinth or botanical garden. A beach, lake side or forest are more choices. As you walk, pay attention to your breathing, notice how it feels in your chest, through your nose. Notice how your clothes feel as they move and the feeling of the ground as you move. Take in the sights one by one, the sounds and scents as well. If things pop into your head, let them flow in and then pit again, like water in a stream. At the end of your walk, take a moment to close your eyes and experience the world around you.
Citrine is a wonderful stone of joy and warmth, something perfect for the cold times often associated with the coming winter. It is said to also be a stone of wealth and prosperithy of all types.
Ginger tea is excellent for helping you feel warm and is said to be good for colds and other illnesses, which often plague use this time of year.
Odin is the King of the Norse Pantheon often sybmolized by his two ravens, Huginn and Munnin. He is said to be wise, even sacrificing his eye to gain further wisdom and also discovering the Runic letters. He is also a warrior god who rules over Valhalla, the land of the dead where only the few chosen warriors went when they died.
Since I had Odin as the diety of the month, I thought it appropriate to speak about the runes. They are both letters as well as symbols of different animals and items. For example, the one that looks like an uppercase B is the symbol for Birch. When read for divination, Birch symbolizes fertility and growth.
