Animal Symbolism

Butterflies and Dragonflies often symbolize messages. Butterflies have the extra symbolism of new life. Moths are related to dreams and the messages received through them. Bees teach us about working together for a common good.

Each bird has its own symbolism but, as a whole, they are linked to freedom and movement as well as another perspective.. Predatory birds, like haws and eagles, often are symbols of a fighting spirit and bravery. Ravens and Crows are known for their intelligence and owl's their wisdom. 

Wolves symbolize strength and family. Dogs teach us about unconditional love and loyalty. Coyotes are known to be tricksters. Foxes are also known for being crafty and often use their speed and agility to both escape danger and catch prey.

Cats of all types can teach us boundaries. House cats are quite good at this as well as teaching about asking for your own needs to be met. Large cats, like tigers and leopards, are symbollic of power and self-reliance.

Bears tend to symbolize a protective mother instinct. They can be quite ferocious and connect to Earth energies. Bears can go into a state called torpir where their systems slow down and they can sleep for around 100 days. This can symbolize going within and the importance of recuperating.

Most antlered animals, like deer and elk, symbolize masculine energies and connect with the sun, especially bucks. They are swift and agile and teach about being alert and aware.

Pigs symbolize wealth and fertility. Cows and Bulls are similar but, depending on their gender, have very feminine nurturing energy or very masculine active energies. Sheep teach us about gentleness. Goats can help us learn about joy and standing up for ourselves. Horses teach us about trust and have symbolized movement in several cultures for a long time.

Rabbits are a symbol of fertility, which is why Easter (Ostara) has them center stage. They are also very swift and agile and connect with Springtime and Earth energies. Mice are known to be adaptable and can llive almost anywhere. Ferrets symbolize curiosity and our inner child.
